Service Description

Keep it in COCA* is the Guardians of our Children initiative where the team interviews parents who have successfully utilised aspects of the court process to achieve, or at least, shift their children’s trajectory towards a high level of co-parenting. These online interviews are invitation only and held on the last Wednesday of each month. KiiC#1 – Changeovers [August 2024] We speak with parents whose COCA changeover went horribly wrong which pushed them out of COCA and into the Crimes Act. We discuss how they were found not-guilty of assault with intent to injure and hear their tips on how to Keep your case in COCA. KiiC #2 - Self-Litigation [September 2024] The team interviews a mum and a dad from two separate cases who had successfully self-litigated right up to their final hearings. We hear how they now have a wonderful relationship with their children and happy with their current co-parenting dynamics. KiiC#3 -Section 136 [October 2024] We hear from a dad whose own research into COCA led him to section 136 as an alternative to the section 133 Cultural Report. S135 allowed him to bring in a family member to speak to the courts about the importance of child’s whakapapa which could only be strengthened by more meaningful contact with her dad and the wider whanau. KiiC#4 - Protection Orders [November 2024] This month’s discussion explores the definition of family violence and how easy it is to get a protection order against you. What does it mean? How does it impact your life? Can you win in COCA even with a protection order against you? How to manage supervised contact and how to eventually get it discharged. KiiC#5 - Parenting Orders [February 2025] This month's discussion explores all aspects of parenting orders. How to best write them yourself; what many parents miss that lead to ongoing conflict; why parenting orders by consent are often much better than judge made orders; and why so many cases end up back in court after final orders are made. We show you how to do it once and do it right. KiiC#6 - McKenzie Friend/Lay Assistant [March 2025] In this KiiC webinar we speak with Allan Harvey. Allan went through family court himself and for over 20 years now has been in and out of family court assisting others as a McKenzie Friend.
